Juniors and Seniors form the backbone of Lifesaving Duties and Competitions. Please read this information as it will assist in understanding how duties and competitions work.
DUTIES
A Junior Duty member is aged between 14 and 17.
A Senior Duty member is 18 and over.
REQUIREMENTS
All duty members need an award depending on their age:
JUNIOR LIFEGUARD AWARD (JLA):
This is done by those aged 14-17. This award enables you to compete and do duties until you turn 17. Once you turn 17, you have 6 weeks to upgrade.
LIFEGUARD AWARD (LA):
The Lifeguard Award is an extension of the JLA and enables you to compete and do duties until after Masters.
Every duty member with an award be it JLA or LA needs an annual refresher and retest (except if they qualified in that year). Retest dates are set by the Club and each Club has approximately 2 retests per year. Those retesting are encouraged to do so as early in the season as possible. A copy of your retest can be obtained from the Club secretary (not through Lifesaving South Africa). Your ID, gloves, whistle and pocket mask need to be brought to the retest.
UNIFORM:
A compulsory uniform is available from the club at no additional charge. This kit is not easy to come by and expensive to replace so must be looked after. Should a lifeguard wish to purchase a speedo, ladies full piece, lifeguard hat or anorak, they will be billed for each additional item and these amounts are payable upfront.
